Going back in time for this post! Back in 1996, chase cards were gaining in prevelance. Nearly 30 years later, my opinion is still the same now as then: most are useless but a few are pretty cool. One that I set my sights on was from Score, of all brands. That set? The majestically named “Titanic Taters.” I hit one in a pack and picked up two last year from COMC. Let’s see what’s in my collection.
Albert Belle
Card 1 of 18
Belle was the card I hit busting a box. Which, at the time, not a bad hit. The Indians were fresh off a World Series loss and seemed destined to eventually win a title. He was the man.
The back of the card shares that he hit a 450-foot blast at Fenway park on May 20,, 1995.
Dante Bichette
Card 7 of 18
Dante was supposed to be the “protection” behind Ken Griffey, Jr. when the Reds first acquired The Kid. Really kinda hoping his son, Bo, gets to the next level.
Dante always seemed to a product of the thin air of Denver, as he blasted a 460-foot homer at Coors Field. Interestingly, my card has the details of McGwire’s tater.
Mark McGwire
Card 6 of 18
And now, the one I really wanted. Big Mac.
He hit a 470-foot absolute BOMB in the cavernous Oakland Stadium on September 20, 1995. Titanic, indeed.
Took 27 years, but well worth the wait.
A mere 16.7% completion and it’s not a set I plan to chase. I don’t have any set as “wanted for trade” on Beckett.com. Gotta love the 90s and the Bash Brothers.
